I'm not normally into 'Horror' as such but read this on a recommendation from a friend. (Don't worry - it turned out not to be horror at all)
It's not literary fiction but it is an absolute classic example of a fast paced thriller. Once the action starts your buttocks literally do not unclench until the end of the book! It is an absolute roller coaster of a ride and the best example I've seen of hooking the reader in and then pulling the rug from under them. It may never win the Nobel prize but if want to see how it's done... borrow the book, buy the book, steal the book from your invalid grandma - just read it!
