Yes, it's me again; trying to breath life into a comatose forum!
I have diufficulty settling down to write anywhere and by far the best place is in the corner of my kitchen at home, where MY computer sits. So I have a problem in that I am now a long way from home for a long time. I am having to acclimatise myself to working at someone elses computer with none of my books, wine bottles and coffee cups forming a protective barrier. What I have realised (and I knew it all along without realising) is that I disappear up my own imagination when I write and my belief that the only place I can do so is my kitchen, is wrong.
I have to get used to my surroundings first though so a week in the Dordogne is not enough - would need at least two months :-)

Yes, this forum has gone very quiet. Where is everyone?
On the subject of writing places, I have just had a letter published on this in Writers' Forum magazine. The magazine runs a feature every month about various authors and where they like to write. Writing Magazine runs a similar feature, though this focusses more on the author's writing day. I find such articles very interesting to read.
As for where I write, well, anywhere really. I think I do most of my writing in bed though! I know I'm not alone. I have recently read an interview (can't remember the author), where she admits she does a lot of her writing in bed too. If you're writing first thing in the morning, it's the best place to be.
Ideally I'd like to have a room, or even just a desk of my own, where I can leave all my writing stuff and not worry about it being moved, but when this will happen I don't know.

I have the smallest, cramped cupboard under the stairs to write at the moment so am trying to add to the 'Summer House' funs by doing what I can and selling what's not nailed down.
To give you an idea of how small my working area is - check out the picture.
Helen - I haven't got Writer's Forum yet but will have a looky when I get to the newsagents.

We need some good strong discussions I reckon to try and get the blood flowing to our Xmas-addled brains!

My fave place to write is sitting on my bed (during the day) with a couple of cushions behind my back and the music channels on in the background and my laptop on my lap - I have no idea why but that particular setting seems to send me into a kind of daze where I write better.
Unfortunately as my laptop is now officaly screwed and I've had 2 in 2 years, I think I'll have to invest in a desktop next time so I'll have to find a new writing cocoon!
P.S. Richard, that cupboard's tiny.

Sammi,
You have inspired an idea. Design a computer desk around a bed.
The NHS have similar contraptions but they are plugged in to a person, not a keyboard.
I hate laptops because I find them so awkward and I hate writing in bed. Bed is for two things only - and one of them is sleeping ;-)

I like to write at my computer desk too.
My favoutite time is after a late shift. The kids are in bed, my wife is on the verge of going to bed and the house is mine.
Then I just write.
It always works for me and my 'late shift sessions' have never run into a writers block.
The worst creative time for me is afternoons. The kids are back from school, bickering constantly because they're tired and irritable. The wife is looking at me typing away thinking to herself, "Surely he's got something to do in the garden/the house/on the car/on the scooter" and the phone rings CONSTANTLY.
I'm beginning to hate our phone.
2230 hours, the house is asleep and I sit alone with only the patient companionship of a couple of cats to disturb me.
That's how I like to write.

Bit bored so I was looking through the old threads when I found this one. As my laptop has died and I've moved onto a desktop I thought I'd share what my workspace now looks like. Prepare yourself!
As you can see my desk is also my dressing table and it's more than a little bit messy. Never mind, surrounding myself with crap seems to work for me!
