Break of Dawn He opened the curtains slowly, an awkward early morning slowness and gazed out over the fields across the valley. At first, his eyes struggled with the brightness for it was a clear, frosty morning and there wasn’t a cloud until the far horizon. The new day had arrived like a long lost relative suddenly locating its own identity. It felt as if it wanted to reach out, take him by the hand, and show him what possibilities it had to offer.
The lawn resembled a new white carpet, stretched from one side of the garden to the other, reminding him of the icing on a Christmas cake. Extra long blades of white grass tried to climb above the masses, as if straining for a view in a crowd of people. A touch of breeze made it look like a group of meerkats bobbing up and down, watching the action unfold. The still whiteness defied anyone to dare walk across and disturb its pristine condition. It would be seen as an infringement and mar the rest of the day. The early morning and sunrise were sacred and had to be treated with respect. His eyes followed the outline of the garden, until he settled on the grandfather of the scene, the big oak tree. Standing guard over the garden as it had done for years, no one daring to challenge its authority. It was hard to imagine how many dawns the tree had presided over. Its majestic presence adding a quiet serenity to the daybreak.
Dawn heralds the accompanying chorus from the local birdlife. Their infectious enthusiasm for the new day never failed to amaze him. He could hear the resident blackbird singing away with great gusto. The hard ground and subsequent lack of worms not failing to dampen his voice. Breakfast could wait; it was a cheerful tune that was required at this time. Sneaking a heartfelt look at the proceedings, the sun was beginning to show her face for the new day’s celebration. Its gradual appearance brought a smile to his face, the clean, fresh colour highlighting the sunrise. By its very presence, it illuminates all that is good. A big orange ball spreading warmth and good feeling all around.
It’s true what they say, everything is so much better when the sun shines.

It seemed to me that if, at some point in the distant future, when scores of young people take up the lesson of Yes, it would be a shame if all they did was get drunk and push a couple of monks in a pond.
