A calm ripple coasted across the river, blurring the reflected streetlights as they shimmered heavenward. Above, the charcoal mantle faded, the outlines of buildings now traceable. The sooty puffs of a single rain cloud cruised effortlessly above a barge sailing beneath it, the slate coloured night sky silently bleaching itself. Stained by the lemon and plum of early dawn the cloud mellowed. No rain today. A burnt orange crept upwards, broken by the awakening pinprick of first light escaping the horizon. The sun lifted her head, a slender shaft of brilliance spilling out across the capital. Chasing the silhouette of a plane, a swan took off from the water and headed for the light. An amber warmth yawned across the water, flooding the city as the new day greeted it. The light climbed against the clear cobalt sky, separating the flowers from the trees, the people from the buildings. A fresh journey, but back again tomorrow.

It seemed to me that if, at some point in the distant future, when scores of young people take up the lesson of Yes, it would be a shame if all they did was get drunk and push a couple of monks in a pond.
