I spent a week at CenterParcs in Sherwood forest in May. The seclusion and lack of cars made it ideal for uninterrupted early morning writing. I got loads done and am going to book another week next April (will try to coincide it with the start or finish of a writing project).
They've got a 30% off deal on at the moment - until 21/10/07 (No, I don't work there before you ask!) Click the link below.
Yes, I agree - I spent a week there myself this year. We dropped the car off on the Monday morning and didn't see it again until we left - ideal. So peaceful. The accomodation was fine too with all mod cons.
We didn't get chance to do much sunbathing or barbequeing (but then look at what a summer we've had) but the large patio doors let you look out over the woods and catch sight of the wild life.
Thumbs up for the Dordogne too - I stayed near Perigeux a few years ago and it was bliss.
The view puts me in mind of what the Vale of York must have been like several hundreds of years ago and is a near perfect antidote to everything that is wrong with popular 'culture'.
Very peaceful and quiet, the only downside is that there's no WiFi coverage and nowhere to plug my laptop in

I cannot rave enough about the sheer bliss of a week on Holy Island, Lindisfarne, in Northumberland: Cut off by the tide in December on retreat. Breath taking, awe inspiring, adjective illuding ... Deserted beaches, amazing sunsets, rocks, a castle, ruined abbey, seals, sea birds, space, solitude, hot chocolate.
But don't all rush there at once, you'll spoil the tranquillity. Don't go in the summer, too many tourists. But DO GO. You will fall in love, and you may write too!

Hi Annie,
Welcome to the Struggling Authors forum.
I agree totally about Lindisfarne, I have been there out of season and it has that ethereal, 'time travel' aura about it. (Almost like the Mists of Avalon type atmosphere) If that can't get creative juices flowing then nothing will!
Feel free to send in a picture if you have one - apparently they paint a thousand words. [It may even be featured in Writer's Block on the main site].
Thanks
RG
(PS - Are you from one of the libraries North of York where I did my postcard run this weekend
