Just wanted to let you all know about two short story competitions I have discovered recently:
1. The Lady magazine has launched its annual competition. There is no theme. Your story must be between 2000 to 2200 words in length, and the categories are as follows: Comedy, historical or mystery. The closing date is 16th December 2008. Full details can be found in edition of The Lady magazine, which was published on 14th October.
2. Mslexia magazine is running a short story competition, but it's for female writers only. The closing date is 23rd January 2009. Full details can be found at: http://www.mslexia.co.uk/shop/scomp_enter.html
I think that I'll be entering one of the competitions, if not both.

Nice one Hedw, thank you . I came across some at Chapter One Promotions that people might also be interested in
Short Story Competition - Stories must be no longer than 2500 words and previously unpublished. The entry fee is £10 but the first prize is £2500. Deadline is midnight on Weds 14th Jan, 2009
They're also going to be running a novel competition. They're not accepting entries before Thurs 1st Jan 2009, and the closing date isn't until Sun 28th Feb 2010, but if there's a novel that you've already started on it may be worth a look.
It seemed to me that if, at some point in the distant future, when scores of young people take up the lesson of Yes, it would be a shame if all they did was get drunk and push a couple of monks in a pond.
I've decided to adapt an old story of mine for The Lady competition. I've decided it will fit into the comedy category, though it needs to be slightly longer. And now I've had a few months break from reading it, I see it needs work! Am having fun with it though.
